From December 3rd to 5th, 2024, Turkana Pastoralist Development Organization (TUPADO), with support from OXFAM Kenya and funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), facilitated a transformative three-day training at New Market, Todonyang. This initiative focused on strengthening Village Savings and Loaning Groups (VSLGs) by equipping participants with essential skills in group management, leadership, and sustainability. The training aimed to empower community members to foster economic resilience, address social challenges, and create inclusive environments for all.
The first day concentrated on group formation and development, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, goal setting, and leadership. Participants explored the dynamics of effective group collaboration and practiced electing leaders through transparent processes. Practical sessions introduced the principles of VSLGs, including member savings, social fund contributions, and loan management. These activities laid the foundation for sustainable group operations and financial literacy.
On the second day, participants focused on developing group constitutions and learning conflict management strategies. Facilitators guided attendees in drafting constitutions that outlined group rules and responsibilities to ensure accountability and cohesion. In the afternoon, participants examined the causes and types of conflicts within groups. Role-playing exercises provided practical tools for resolving disputes constructively, fostering harmony and cooperation within VSLGs.
The final day addressed record-keeping, asset management, and cross-cutting issues such as community health, gender equality, and inclusivity. Participants practiced maintaining accurate financial records and discussed strategies for managing group assets effectively. Sessions on entrepreneurship inspired participants to generate business ideas and create actionable business plans. The training concluded with discussions on pressing social issues, including drug abuse and disability inclusion, empowering participants to build more inclusive and resilient communities.
This impactful training initiative underscores TUPADO’s commitment to empowering Turkana communities through capacity building and sustainable development, supported by OXFAM Kenya and DFAT. The knowledge and skills gained by participants will contribute to strengthening community groups, fostering economic growth, and addressing critical social challenges in the region.
